What is a facelift?

There are a number of cosmetic surgical procedures of the face that are covered by this term. These include the facial lift, cervical and cervicofacial lift, temporal lift, frontal lift, eyebrow lift, mini-facelift, lift with no scar behind the ear, SMAS or deep muscle lift, sub-cutaneous lift…Every patient is different and each one needs a procedure that is adapted to their particular need. In every case, facial lift seeks to reposition and tighten skin that has become loose with age. This procedure can be complemented with a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

GOING ABROAD FOR SURGERY

According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS Council member Kevin Hancock:

‘The BAAPS have consistently advised against traveling abroad for any kind of surgery – not just cosmetic – as all surgical procedures carry risks, even when performed by a reputable surgeon in the UK. The possibility of complications increases considerably with travel and limits the availability of aftercare.

Patients who opt for medical tourism are risking their health – often going without essential pre-surgical screenings or follow-up care that would be standard practice in their home country. They may also feel pressured to ultimately undergo an unnecessary procedure, having spent time and money to travel to their destination.

How much does a facelift cost, what is a mini facelift and how long does it last?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure which aims to tighten up the face and reduce sagging skin. Those with jowls or a lot of loose skin around the lower face are typically the ones going under the knife. It is typically performed under general anesthetic and according to the NHS, the surgery typically goes as follows:

Make cuts (incisions) above the hairline at the temples, which extend down in front of your ear, underneath your earlobe and behind the ear make cuts under the chin if the jawline is also being lifted remove the surplus facial skin pull the remaining skin backward and upwards before stitching it into its new position sometimes redistribute facial fat and tissue or add this to the face bandage the face to minimize bruising and swelling

A full facelift’s effects will last around five to seven years according to most statistics
